While I usually paint in oil and water color these are from a sketch book that I take with me. I have kept books of my life drawings for years but this is the first time ive returned to them to paint and put them to gether in a theme. The themes keep emerging as I examine the work. It often seems incoherent to me. But I am finding that it isn’t and is not accidental. This project has given me a chance to look even deeper into my life - because I am sharing work on a daily basis.
These images are part of a single work, "The Earth Brings Forth”. It came out of a drawing I first did this May of the landscape as we drove to Greenfield to contra dance. At the dance I drew in the landscape two dancers. I found the combination haunting and then painted it. It started to look to me like the earth giving birth and two people watching as if parents. I suppose it is really myself as I felt being pregnant or being born. I felt like the earth and an embryo. I am expressing the feeling I had 60 years ago. It took this long to articulate.
